What does this involve?
This grant aims to encourage businesses in Scotland to invest in capital assets such as buildings and machinery.
For example, it can be used to cover the cost of:
- buying land, buildings or machinery
- preparing a site
- buying vehicles
- purchasing property leases (under specific circumstances)
To receive this grant, your project must contribute to Scottish Enterprise's strategy for economic transformation. This strategy is made up of individual goals, or missions, which include:
- boosting productivity through capital investment in Scotland
- scaling up innovation in Scotland
- supporting the energy transition in Scotland
It should also contribute towards at least one of Scottish Enterprise’s current goals, which are to increase:
- investment in research and development and/or innovation
- capital investment
- the amount of growth funding raised by businesses
- international export sales
- the number of jobs created or safeguarded paying at least the Living Wage
- estimated CO2 savings
Different funding levels are available depending on the size of your business. The grants will cover:
- up to 40% of the eligible project costs for small companies (with fewer than 50 employees and less than £15 million in revenue)
- up to 30% of the eligible project costs for medium companies (with between 50 and 250 employees and less than £54 million in revenue)
- up to 20% of the eligible project costs for large companies (with more than 250 employees or more than £54 million in revenue)
The maximum grant value is capped at £15,000,000. The exact amount you receive will depend on your evidenced need.
Am I eligible?
The grant is available to businesses that are located in Scotland, have a plan to move to Scotland, or plan to open a facility in Scotland.
Your business can be:
- Scottish-owned
- not Scottish owned but headquartered in Scotland
- not headquartered in Scotland
Your company is eligible to apply if:
- your project involves spending on capital assets such as buildings, machinery or equipment
- your project is located in Scotland
- you need funding for the project to proceed
- you can demonstrate the project will have beneficial effects on the UK economy
- you adhere to the Fair Work Framework for employee rights
- you have a plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045
You don't need to have worked with Scottish Enterprise before to apply for this grant.
You are not eligible if your project:
- is carried out in well-served markets such as tourism or retail
- has already started before you apply
Your project must also focus on one or more of Scottish Enterprise's priority areas, or missions. This means your project should help to (at least one of the following):
- create an internationally competitive energy transition industry in Scotland
- improve innovation in future high-growth industries in Scotland
- increase capital investment to improve Scotland's productivity
If your project does not support one of these missions, it may still be considered if you can demonstrate that it will have a transformational impact on the Scottish economy.
Your project should also contribute towards at least one of Scottish Enterprise’s current goals, which are to increase:
- investment in research and development and/or innovation
- capital investment
- the amount of growth funding raised by businesses
- international export sales
- the number of jobs created or safeguarded paying at least the Living Wage
- estimated CO2 savings
What does this cost?
There is no cost to apply.
You'll need to pay for all project costs upfront, then submit a claim for the eligible costs by an agreed date to receive your grant.
The grants will cover:
- up to 40% of the eligible project costs for small companies (with fewer than 50 employees and less than £15 million in revenue)
- up to 30% of the eligible project costs for medium companies (with between 50 and 250 employees and less than £54 million in revenue)
- up to 20% of the eligible project costs for large companies (with more than 250 employees or more than £54 million in revenue)
The maximum amount you can receive is capped at £15,000,000. You'll need to cover any remaining costs through other sources.
Who is this for?
This grant is available to businesses already present in Scotland or looking to move to Scotland.
How long does this take?
The processing time for your application will depend on the size of the grant you request. Larger grants will need more time to be assessed. Generally, it will take at least a month before your application can progress to the next stage.
There is no deadline to apply and this funding will be available every financial year.
Important information
If your company already has a Scottish Enterprise account manager or adviser, you should provide them with a short description of your project so they can assess your eligibility.
