Communities Leading in Tourism

What does this involve?

Communities Leading in Tourism is a personal leadership programme which will bring like-minded individuals together to maximise community-led tourism recovery and opportunities.

By taking part in the course, you will:

  • develop your personal leadership skills
  • gain insight into the potential opportunities tourism offers your community
  • gain a thorough understanding of the complexities of the tourism sector
  • hear inspiring stories of communities, in the UK and internationally, which have taken a lead in tourism to build economic resilience
  • create a strategic vision and plan for leading the sustainable development of tourism in Scotland, to support recovery post Covid-19
  • participate in a global community of practice sharing experience, insights and inspiration around community-led tourism

Am I eligible?

This online course is open to individuals from community and tourism organisations across Scotland. You must apply through the Social Enterprise Academy.

As places are limited and competitive, partners are looking for aspiring future leaders from across rural Scotland who can demonstrate:

  • how taking part will help them deliver long-term local benefit
  • that they can commit to the full programme

What does this cost?

This course is fully funded. However, there will be a cost in terms of your time away from your business/organisation.

This course is part of the Scottish Tourism Leadership Programme, supported by the Scottish Government in response to COVID-19.

Who is this for?

Aspiring future leaders from across rural Scotland with an interest in tourism who are working or volunteering with community organisations and/or social enterprises. 

How long does this take?

This is a 12-day programme, currently being delivered entirely online over a 3-month period.

It will be led by tourism specialists. The programme comprises:

  • 3 facilitated ‘Virtual Residentials’ that will take place over 1 to 2 days
  • 6 evening webinars 
  • approximately 4 to 6 hours per module of self-directed learning outside the live sessions

Important information

This is the fourth cohort of the highly successful Communities Leading in Tourism course. By taking part, you’ll automatically join a network of previous participants who share ideas and support. You’ll also be part of the wider Scottish Tourism Leadership Programme alumni network.

There are up to 30 places available. The programme begins in October, and applications close on the 29 August 2021.
