Graduate and student placements in the Highlands and Islands

Support provided by Highlands and Islands Enterprise

What does this involve?

ScotGrad is a Scotland-wide programme operated by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). The programme provides funding to account managed clients who want to employ a graduate or student to deliver a specific project for their business.

Since its establishment in 2013, ScotGrad has been working with employers across the Highlands and Islands to source talented graduates and students whose new ideas, skills and up-to-date knowledge help organisations reach their ambitions.

Am I eligible?

In the Highlands and Islands Enterprise area, the programme is only available to organisations that are account managed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Organisations should have the ambition and potential to trade outwith the region and achieve high growth, or to deliver significant benefits within a fragile area.

What does this cost?

You’ll pay your graduate a minimum salary of £17,500 per year, or the pro-rata equivalent for a 37-hour week.

You’ll get support towards the cost of the graduate’s salary and employers’ national insurance contributions. We'll explain this in detail during your initial enquiry.

The programme is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. In most cases, employers get funding to help support the placement, allowing organisations to attract new talent to enhance business growth.

Who is this for?

This is open to businesses, social enterprises and community organisations in Scotland.

How long does this take?

The initial project scoping stage and recruitment period can take approximately 6-8 weeks. Graduate placements can last up to 12 months and student placements can last up to 12 weeks over the summer.

Important information

All ScotGrads participate in a mandatory business skills residential training course. This is provided to develop the graduate/student and to assist them with their project.
