Access To Work mental health support service

What does this involve?

This service offers free, long-term, confidential support to Scottish employers, employees, apprentices and self-employed people who need help to improve their mental health at work.

The support can help you overcome work-related mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, burnout and depression.

This is a free self-referral service. You do not need a formal mental health diagnosis to use it.

The support is provided virtually by telephone or video call. You'll receive one appointment a month for a period of 9 months. Each appointment lasts for one hour.

All participants will receive a personalised support plan and one-to-one advice from a trained mental health coach, including coping strategies to help improve your mental health at work.

The deadline to apply is midnight on Sunday 20 August 2028.

Am I eligible?

Yes, if you're one of the following:

  • an employer with fewer than 250 employees
  • an employee or apprentice who is currently in paid employment
  • self-employed

You must also:

  • be over 16 years old
  • live in Scotland
  • have a National Insurance number to confirm your current employment

This is a free self-referral service. You do not need a formal mental health diagnosis to use it.

This is a free service.

Who is this for?

Employers, employees, apprentices and self-employed people in Scotland who need support for their work-related mental health, or have employees struggling with their mental health.

How long does this take?

The service opened for self-referral applications on 20 August 2024.

Your application will typically be processed within 10 working days.

The support is provided over a period of up to 9 months. You'll receive one appointment a month during this period. Each appointment lasts for one hour.

The deadline to apply is midnight on Sunday 20 August 2028.

Important information

You'll be asked to submit your National Insurance number as part of your self-referral application. The Department for Work and Pensions will review all applications for the service on a case-by-case basis.
