Young Person Guarantee

Support provided by Skills Development Scotland

What does this involve?

Part of a £60 million investment, the Young Person's Guarantee was created to ensure the opportunity of a job, placement, training or volunteering for every 16-24 year old in Scotland. The aim is for young people to be given opportunities according to their personal goals and ambitions.

The Young Person’s Guarantee offers all young people the opportunity of:

  • An apprenticeship
  • Fair employment including work experience
  • Participating in a formal volunteering programme
  • Training
  • Going to university or college

If you're an employer, the Young Person's Guarantee can give you the resources and support to develop and build your workforce with young talent. You can engage with the Young Person's Guarantee in the following ways:

  • Inspire pupils and college students to gain the skills needed for the world of work
  • Engage with, and create opportunities for, young people who face barriers to work
  • Create work based learning, training and upskilling opportunities for young people
  • Create jobs and apprenticeships to support the Guarantee
  • Create an inclusive and fair workplace which supports all young people and provides fair work

Further information can be found on My World of Work.

Am I eligible?

The Young Person's Guarantee is aimed at businesses who would like to create routes into the workplace for young people.

The guarantee must be employer-led. Therefore, young people should be able to access the Guarantee easily and feel supported to reach their full working potential.

What does this cost?

Funding will be available to support new young people joining your business. It will be issued through an Apprenticeship Employer Grant.

  • £5,000 will be made available for employers taking on a 16 to 24-year old apprentice, and for those aged up to 29 years who are either disabled, care leavers or Black and Minority Ethnic (BME)
  • £3,500 will be made available for employers taking on an apprentice aged 25 or over

Funding will be available for eligible employers where the apprenticeship start date was on or after 1st December 2020. Funding will be available for starts until 25th March 2021 or until funding levels are exceeded, whichever comes first.

Who is this for?

All businesses within Scotland.
