Screen Scotland - Film Development and Production Fund

Support provided by Screen Scotland

What does this involve?

Funding is available to support the development and production of feature-length films and documentaries made by filmmakers based in Scotland. Both live-action and animated films are eligible.

There are 2 routes for funding:

  • Single Project Development Funding – helps cover the initial development costs of a single feature film or documentary project, usually with grants of between £3,000 and £50,000
  • Film Production Funding – helps cover the production costs of a film or documentary project, usually with grants of between £100,000 and £500,000

The fund will support projects with international appeal that have the potential to be distinctive, high-quality and commercially and/or creatively driven.

Am I eligible?

Yes, if you are one of the following:

  • a producer based in Scotland, with a screenwriter attached to your project
  • a producer based outside Scotland who is working with Scotland-based talent and has a screenwriter attached to your project
  • an individual screenwriter based in Scotland who has had a feature film produced and released theatrically and/or at recognised international festivals

All applicants must have an established track record. This means you've either produced and/or written a feature film that has been theatrically released, distributed, and/or has received critical acclaim at international festivals.

Screen Scotland cannot fully fund the production costs of any project, regardless of the budget. To be eligible, you'll need to have sources of funding in place other than Screen Scotland and the UK Film Tax Credit.

All applicants to this fund will be required to submit their project to the BFI Diversity Standards - Screen Scotland Pilot, external link which will open in a new windowopens in a new window programme before they apply.

What does this cost?

It is free to apply.

Screen Scotland cannot fully fund the production costs of any project, regardless of the budget. You'll need to have other market finance in place to support some costs in order to be eligible for this funding.

Who is this for?

Feature film producers and screenwriters based in Scotland, or producers developing projects with writing and/or directing talent based in Scotland.

How long does this take?

You'll get a decision within 6 weeks for development applications, and within 10 weeks for production applications.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with no deadlines. For production applications, you should apply no later than 12 weeks before you intend to begin pre-production.
