Museums and Galleries Scotland Recovery and Resilience Fund

Support provided by Museums and Galleries Scotland

What does this involve?

Following round 1 of the Recovery and Resilience Fund, which closed in October 2020, additional funding has been made available by the Scottish Government. Round 2 is now open for applications. Expressions of interest must be received by midday 19 February 2021.

Whereas round 1 made funds available to independent Scottish museums put at risk as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to help them meet their operating and critical costs through to 31 March 2021, round 2 now offers support with these costs through to 30 June 2021.

As with round 1, funding for round 2 aims to secure the future of those independent Scottish museums most vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic. Therefore, in addition to supporting operating costs where needed, the fund will support resilience-building activity where it can be demonstrated that there will be a clear and rapid impact on the sustainability of these museums.

Awards will be made between 12 and 31 March 2021 and all funds must be spent by award recipients by 30 June 2021.

Am I eligible?

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) will accept applications from any independent museum in Scotland run by a not-for-profit organisation meeting the following criteria.

Eligible organisations will meet the following definition of a museum: “Museums enable people to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment. They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artefacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society.” (MA definition, 1988)

They must also:

  • Operate a physical site/space/building which is normally open to the public for a minimum of 20 days a year
  • Provide access for the public to see and engage with the museum’s collections
  • Be a formally constituted not-for-profit organisation

Please note that organisations with a remit that is wider than running a museum will only be able to apply for support proportionate to their museum activity. For example, you are unlikely to receive 100% of your operating costs if substantial parts of your operating costs come from delivering non-museum activity, or activity that is not undertaken solely to support your museum activity.

Organisations that run museums that are not accredited and that have not previously applied for MGS funds will have to complete an eligibility questionnaire to verify eligibility. To request an eligibility questionnaire, please email: grants@museumsgalleriesscotland.org.uk.

Please note that complete eligibility questionnaires must be submitted to MGS no later than 12 February.

Visit the MGS website to read full details of what the funding can cover.

What does this cost?

This is a free service.

Who is this for?

Independent museums based in Scotland.

How long does this take?

If you wish to apply, you must submit an expression of interest to MGS no later than midday on 19 February.

Awards will be made between 12 and 31 March 2021, and all funds must be spent by award recipients by 30 June 2021.

Important information

If you are eligible and wish to apply, you must email grants@museumsgalleriesscotland.org.uk to let them know you are interested by midday 19 February.

Please include a very brief description of what you are seeking funds for, but you do not need to go into detail on need. This will register as an official expression of interest and MGS will respond as quickly as possible to discuss your ideas.

Please do not telephone or contact individual staff by email. Doing so will not constitute an official expression of interest and could slow down the process.

If MGS decide that you are eligible to apply following their discussion with you, they will send you a link to complete an online application form. You will then have two weeks to complete your application.
