What does this involve?
Scottish Enterprise is providing grant funding for Scottish companies and universities to participate in international, collaborative research and innovation projects. The projects should develop digital solutions for energy systems and networks to support the green energy transition.
The projects are expected to develop new products, processes, or services that address at least one of the following key challenges:
- social sustainability – for example:
- gender and diversity aspects of digitalisation in the energy system
- privacy
- ownership and integrity
- solutions to overcome energy poverty and include all social groups
- energy and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure – for example:
- data platforms and APIs
- standardisation
- resilience
- cyber and data security
- internet of things
- 5G
- smart buildings
- smart metering
- sensors
- automation - including adaptation of consumer behaviour and automated consumption planning
- inclusion of energy system-relevant sectors such as transport and mobility or farming
- resource efficiency (including energy)
- artificial intelligence or machine learning
- energy marketplaces, business models and communication – for example:
- pairing traditional energy sectors with stakeholders and partners in other industries, such as agriculture, mobility or production enterprises
- energy management and services
- big data, and management of big data from different sources
There are 7 countries that provide funding for the call: Scotland, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Romania, Czech Republic and Turkey.
Projects must involve partners from at least 2 of these countries. Scottish companies can collaborate with partners in any of the countries.
The recommended duration for funded research projects is 18 months.
The grant will cover a set percentage of your eligible costs, based on your company size. Grants will cover up to:
- 40% for large companies (with 250 or more employees)
- 50% for small and medium companies (with fewer than 250 employees)
- 100% for research organisations
The deadline to apply is 12 September 2023.
Am I eligible?
Applications are open to companies of any size that are registered and operate, or plan to set up a research and development presence in the Scottish Enterprise area. This includes Aberdeen City and Shire, the east of Scotland, Tayside and the west of Scotland.
Scottish universities and research organisations may also apply if they're working with an eligible Scottish company that seeks funding from Scottish Enterprise.
There are 7 countries that provide funding for the call: Scotland, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Romania, Czech Republic and Turkey.

What does this cost?
This is a free service.
The grant will cover a portion of your eligible costs, depending on the size of your company.
Small or medium-sized enterprises can receive a grant to cover up to 50% of their costs, large enterprises up to 40%, and research organisations up to 100%. You will need to be prepared to cover any additional costs through other sources.

How long does this take?
Timeline and closing dates:
- call opens – 14 June 2023
- deadline for proposals – 12 September 2023 at 1pm (2pm Central European Time)
- notification of applicants – November 2023
- national approval and contracting – December and January 2023
- projects start from December 2023
Important information
You will need to apply online. The lead partner should submit the application on behalf of the group, but all project partners will need to fill out their own organisation and financial details.
