Electric Vehicle Charge Point Tourism Recovery Fund

Support provided by Energy Savings Trust Visit Scotland

What does this involve?

The Electric Vehicle Charge Point Fund provides a one-off payment to tourism businesses in Scotland to help cover the cost to install an electric vehicle charge point.

Businesses can apply for funding to assist in the installation of an electric vehicle charge point on their premises. The funding will cover 75% of the total cost of the charge point and installation (including applicable VAT), up to a maximum of £15,000.

There is limited funding available, and it will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. There is enough funding to cover around 100 charge points.

The fund is administered by Energy Saving Trust (EST) on behalf of VisitScotland and the Scottish Government. The fund is part of the Destination Net Zero programme - a key strand in the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 Tourism Recovery Programme. It aims to support businesses and destinations as they transition to a future of net zero emissions.

Am I eligible?

Yes, if your business:

  • is a tourism business and markets itself as a tourism business
  • is based in Scotland
  • is classed as a micro or small or medium-sized enterprise (SME)
  • has been trading for at least 12 months
  • has an appropriate space in which an EV charge point can be safely installed and used by visitors and staff
  • owns the land on which the EV charge point is installed or, if the property is leased, has written permission from the landowner for the installation

To be eligible for funding, you must obtain a quote from an Energy Saving Trust-approved approved installer. As the grants only cover part of the cost, it is recommended that you source multiple quotes to obtain a competitive price.

Please read the full list of eligibility criteria on the Energy Saving Trust website.

What does this cost?

The funding available will cover 75% of the total cost of the charge point and installation (including applicable VAT), up to a maximum of £15,000. The business must pay for the remaining cost. Note that you will also need to pay for the installation upfront and will receive reimbursement later from Energy Saving Trust.

Who is this for?

Tourism businesses in Scotland that are classed as micro or small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

How long does this take?

Applications are open from midday on 11 May to 8 September 2022 (or earlier if the budget is used up before this date).

Before you apply, you must get a quote from at least one approved installer. Once you submit your application and all supporting documents, Energy Saving Trust (EST) will respond within 15 days.

Once your grant is confirmed in writing, the offer will be valid for 6 months.

You will need to arrange for the installation with the approved installer and pay the invoice upfront, then submit a completion report to EST. Once this is approved, you will be reimbursed.

Important information

As a condition of the funding, following installation, the EV charge point must be made available for visitors or guests to use. The business may charge for this service.

Funding is not available for installations that have already taken place or for installations already in progress.

The process for funding is as follows:

1. Before you apply, you must get a quote from at least one approved installer.

2. Complete the application form on the Energy Saving Trust (EST) website and submit your supporting documents, including the supplier quote.
3. EST will respond within 15 working days.
4. EST will assess the application, and if successful, the team will confirm your grant offer in writing.
5. The grant offer will be valid for 6 months.
6. You can then arrange for the EV charge point to be installed by the approved installer.
7. You will need to pay the installer's invoice upfront and provide a completion report to EST.
8. The report will be checked, and EST will confirm the invoice is to be paid.
