What does this involve?
This challenge supports companies to carry out research and development (R&D) to develop technology that will lead to new commercial uses for CO2 and create jobs as part of the journey to a low carbon economy. The funding will support projects at the appropriate level of technology readiness to develop and test technology in CO2 utilisation projects.
The level of funding will depend on a number of factors. This includes company size and the activity being supported.
Scottish Enterprise will contribute up to 50% of eligible project costs. Grant amounts are estimated to be between £150,000 and £500,000.
Funding will be available from 11 April 2022 until 31 March 2024. All eligible project costs should be incurred during this period.
Am I eligible?
The fund is available to companies based in Scotland, or that aim to establish a presence in Scotland, that are looking to undertake research and development into CO2 technology and create jobs.
Successful applicants must create and/or safeguard jobs throughout the project and maintain these positions for a period of up to 24 months after the project is completed. Suitable projects may use chemical, biological reactions or mineralisation to transform CO2 into a product or component with commercial value.
Projects with a strong focus on carbon capture technology are not eligible, as are projects that do not involve CO2 transformation.
What does this cost?
This is a free service.
Who is this for?
Companies based in Scotland, or that plan to establish a presence here, that carry out research and development into CO2 technology.
How long does this take?
The timescale for applications can vary depending on a number of factors, including if the project is ready to proceed, and appraisal of the expressions of interest and subsequent R&D grant applications.
On average, initial offers of support are usually made within 4 to 6 weeks after you submit your detailed grant application.
Important information
Companies that are about to start relevant projects will be invited to submit an Expression of Interest to be assessed by Scottish Enterprise. If you're assessed as potentially suitable, you'll be asked to submit a detailed application for R&D grant funding.
