What does this involve?

In an ever-changing and increasingly competitive marketplace, innovation is vital for business growth and success.

Co-Innovate offers project funding and practical advice and support to help you:

  • create beneficial ideas
  • work smarter
  • find collaborators and define project
  • improve resilience and competitiveness
  • develop new products, services or processes
  • add value to your business

Co-Innovate is an ‘escalator’ programme, starting with one-to-many workshops and progressing through individual advice and mentoring to grant funding for innovation projects and eventually large scale R&D.

Co-Innovate is supported by €16.6 million from the European Union's INTERREG VA Programme. The programme is led by Intertrade Ireland. It is delivered in the Highlands and Islands by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and in the lowlands by Scottish Enterprise.

Am I eligible?

Yes, if you are an SME in the qualifying regions. All businesses can benefit from the advice element of Co-Innovate.

What does this cost?

Free of charge (subject to your available state aid allowance).

Who is this for?

SMEs in the following regions: Western Isles, Skye and Lochalsh, Lochaber, Argyll and the Isles, Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway.

How long does this take?

This is dependent on how far you progress through the programme. A workshop will take half a day, while the funded projects last 1-2 years.

Important information

Support is divided into 5 ‘Strands’, with Strand 1 being the starting point. There may be scope to then move to any of the other strands, depending on certain criteria being met.

Strand 1: Business innovation workshop

Strand 2: One to one advice via a Business Status Review, which looks at the entire business, and an Innovation Audit, which looks at innovation capability within the business

Strand 3: 10 days of expert advice / mentoring on selected areas of business innovation

Strand 4: A 12 month cross-border (within the eligible area of the Programme) research project in partnership with an academic/research institution. Co-Innovate will support 50% of a Project Manager’s salary (capped to a maximum value of €20,000) along with 24 days of fully funded academic support.

Strand 5: Cross-border collaborative R&D projects, grant funded at up to 50% of the costs of the project. These may be business to business collaborations (€300,000 project), or ‘clusters’ (€600,000 project), involving at least 3 businesses and an academic institution.
