Managing change to historic buildings and places

Support provided by Historic Environment Scotland

What does this involve?

Historic Environment Scotland has produced a series of best practice guides on making alterations to historic buildings.

If you are looking to extend or make alterations to any historic building, these short guides give practical advice on what to consider. The information is useful if you occupy a historic building or your company carries out work on behalf of clients with historic buildings.

The guides provide non-statutory guidance notes that explain how to apply government policies. They'll help ensure any changes you make are in line with the Scottish Planning Policy and the Historic Environment Policy for Scotland.

Each guide looks at a different topic and discusses:

  • the key issues that might arise
  • how best to deal with such issues
  • the reasoning behind this advice
  • additional sources of information

The guides are available to download in PDF format. Each file is less than 25 MB in size.
