Guidance on international travel to and from Scotland during the coronavirus pandemic

Support provided by Scottish Government

What does this involve?

If you plan to travel abroad or enter Scotland from outside the UK, there are certain rules you must follow during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. These rules apply to residents of Scotland and visitors.

The rules you need to follow depend on:

  • where you’ve been in the 10 days before you arrive in Scotland
  • if the country or area you plan to travel to or from is on the red list
  • if you are fully vaccinated or not
  • your age

Topics covered in this guidance include:

  • which countries and areas are currently on the red list
  • the rules you need to follow when you arrive in Scotland from a red list country
  • the rules you need to follow when you arrive in Scotland from a country not on the red list
  • the rules you need to follow if you arrive in another part of the UK from abroad before travelling to Scotland
  • testing rules for travelling to Scotland, including
    • when you need to take a test
    • which types of test are accepted
    • what your test results must show
  • exemptions for certain jobs and circumstances
  • managed isolation in a quarantine hotel, including
    • when you need to self-isolate and for how long
    • how to book your stay
    • how much it costs
    • if you need help to pay for your stay
  • relevant regulations and further information

Many other countries have rules about who can enter and what you can do when you are there. These rules are not related to whether a country is on Scotland’s red list. Before you travel, you should read the FCDO travel advice for the countries you will visit

Important information

From 4 October, there are no longer green and amber lists for travel to Scotland. All countries and territories are either on the red list or non-red list.

The red list is reviewed every 3 weeks. However, countries may move on or off the red list at short notice, so you should double check before you travel.

Other countries and territories have their own rules for travel during COVID-19. Be sure to check the rules for any country or territory that you plan to visit before you travel.

Travelling abroad also carries a risk of bringing new cases and variants of COVID-19 into Scotland. You should think carefully about whether your trip abroad is necessary before you book travel.
