Coronavirus guidance on childcare provision from 26 December to 18 January

Support provided by Scottish Government

What does this involve?

Read guidance to support a phased reopening of day care of children (“childcare”) settings from 26 December 2020 until 18 January 2021 in Scotland. The aim is for a full return to childcare provision on 18 January. The guidance for childminding services in level 4 is unchanged.

The guidance asks local authorities and childcare providers to put in place exceptional arrangements for a phased return to childcare settings from 26 December 2020.

From 26 December attendance in childcare settings should be restricted to:

  • vulnerable children and children of key workers only
  • all staff who, in the judgement of the local authority or setting manager, are required to attend in person to manage these revised reopening arrangements

This may, for example, include:

  • staff needed to ensure the safe opening and operation of the setting, including senior leadership teams
  • facilities management staff, cleaners, etc.
  • staff required to attend to deliver in-person support to vulnerable children and children of key workers

For planning purposes, subject to existing guidance on clinically vulnerable staff, settings may wish to require all staff to attend in person as usual on the day of return to ensure sufficient resource to support and plan for delivery of these arrangements.

The guidance is extensive and covers:

  • a timeline for opening
  • vulnerable children and children of key workers
  • how to apply the guidance
  • dealing with clinically vulnerable staff and pupils
  • communicating with families
  • financial support advice
  • coronavirus testing

From Monday 18 January 2021 onwards, they expect childcare settings to be open to all staff and children as normal and operating within the existing guidance on reducing risks in childcare settings and strategic framework protection levels.

Childminding services with a registered capacity of fewer than 12 may continue to operate their setting for all children during this period. There are no additional restrictions placed on childminding services, other than to follow the existing safe operating guidance.

What does this cost?

This is a free service.

Who is this for?

This is for local authorities and childcare providers in Scotland.
