What does this involve?

The Scottish Government has published guidance for the safe operation of school-age childcare services in the local authority, private and third sectors in Scotland during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Childcare providers should use this guidance to plan their re-opening or review the delivery of services in settings that are already open to ensure they are operating in a manner consistent with wider efforts to control the transmission of the virus and protect the health of children, their families and staff.

Among other topics, this guidance includes information on:

  • performing regular risk assessments
  • specific measures for childcare services in particular protection levels
  • routine asymptomatic testing for staff
  • communication and staff training
  • home working
  • support for specific groups, including those who are shielding or clinically at risk
  • protecting physical and mental wellbeing of children and staff
  • infection prevention and control (including cleaning and hand hygiene, ventilation and PPE)
  • physical distancing and limiting children's and staff's contacts
  • the use of face coverings
  • what to do if children or staff show symptoms, including advice on Test and Protect and case management
  • maximising use of outdoor spaces
  • singing and the risk of transmission
  • provision of meals and snacks
  • evacuation procedures
  • settling-in
  • moving within and between settings
  • blended placements
  • sharing premises
  • visitors to the site

Important information

This advice will be reviewed regularly and revised based on new evidence if necessary. Please check the full guidance on the Scottish Government website regularly to ensure you are using the most current version.

This guidance provides principles to help you make decisions based on the best available evidence to help you operate in a changed context. It will not provide the specific answer to every circumstance which may arise, but provides information to support your professional judgment.

This guidance is not exhaustive, and providers must continue to operate within the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks to ensure the health and wellbeing of children and parents while they are using their service.
