Dundee SME Development Grant

What does this involve?

This grant from Dundee City Council provides funding to help small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the area grow, develop and adapt.

The grant can provide up to £3,000 to cover eligible costs.

You can use the grant to help pay for:

  • research and development (R&D) activity
  • innovation
  • digital transformation
  • measures to achieve net zero objectives
  • infrastructure improvements
  • the introduction of new or improved products, processes, or services
  • feasibility studies linked to company growth, development or expansion 
  • changing to an inclusive ownership business model
  • taking a stand or exhibition space at major trade shows (excluding accommodation, travel and standard delegate attendance costs)

The funding cannot be used for:

  • essential running costs
  • office furnishings
  • working capital, including the purchase of stock or materials
  • training and recruitment costs
  • vehicles
  • goods or services purchased before you're offered the grant 
  • the replacement of old equipment with new on a like-for-like basis
  • costs involved in meeting legislative requirements
  • debt repayment

This scheme is operated by Dundee City Council and is funded by the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

Am I eligible?

This funding is available to existing businesses that:

  • are registered and employ fewer than 250 employees
  • are based in the Dundee City Council area
  • have been trading for at least 18 months
  • are actively trading at the time they apply
  • have a dedicated business bank account
  • are not connected to a tax haven
  • have no outstanding debts to Dundee City Council

Sole traders are not eligible.

Each business can only receive one Dundee SME Development Grant in each financial year.

The grant is discretionary. Each application will be assessed on an individual basis.

What does this cost?

It is free to apply for this grant. 

The maximum grant value is £3,000. The minimum you can request is £2,000.

You do not have to provide match funding. However, if your project costs are more than £3,000, you'll have to provide the extra funds yourself.

Note that you'll need to cover the full costs upfront, then submit a claim with proof of your spending to receive the grant. 

Who is this for?

Existing registered businesses in the Dundee City Council area with fewer than 250 employees.

How long does this take?

Eligible companies can apply for the grant between April and December 2024.

Once you submit your application, an officer will contact you within 3 working weeks. 

The grant will be paid out after you make your purchases and submit receipts or invoices with your claim. 

All grants must be spent and claims submitted before the end of February 2025.
